Finding Church Employment on Line......

There are a few major venues on line where you can either view church jobs that are posted throughout the nation and or post your resume and tell what your looking for.

I would be interested in getting some feedback from anyone who has used these sites successfully. To date the only thing I have noticed is that some posting that church pay to put up seem to be on line for several months so either churches hire and forget to cancel the ad, the wages and benefits are inadequate for the skils required or the church board is just too picky.

Heere are a few sites that might be helpful in your search; if you know of others, let me know. Individual denominations sometimes do post their own.

Worship His Majesty......

I will never forgot one particular Prelude back in 1981. I had just moved to Southern California from Virginia and decided one Sunday to worship at Evangelical Free Church in Fullerton. Howie Stevenson was the Minister of Music at that time. Howie was not only a superb choral director, he also was a very competent pianist.

He had chosen a simple hymn, "When Morning Guilds the Skies" to open the service with a cellist playing the melody in a deep and reasonate register....Howie was providing very simple basic chords as a backdrop for the cellist. The auditorium has a unique very high dome above the front chancel area and the sun billows in similar to a sun dial during the am services and cascades its way around the choir loft and fills the altar with a brillant light.

I felt like I had died and gone to heaven! With the new sunrise beginning to make is waft across the choir loft hearing this beautiful deep melody was such an inspirational way to open a worship service. Quiet yet so meaningful. I am sure others were touched as well.

I am sure you have your own set of memories in your worship of God where you may have created a similar Prelude or Music Offering during a service. Please feel free to write me and share your moments.

God touches all of us in different times and in different ways. It may be through witnessing a sunset, a child singing or the simple chirping of a bird. We see and hear God's presence in magnificent ways.

All we have to do is stop and listen.

Church Organs

When considering a new instrument for your congregation, you can always trust the great advice and guidance of Dr. Bob Tall and his staff at Tall and Associates.

He specializes in Classical Organs, Home Organs, Digital Piano and Midi Systems.

Dr. Tall respresents Roland, Rodgers Organ and Paragon Pipe Organs.

You will find his website very informative www.tallassociates.com.

Art Scott fully endorses his services and has been a friend to Dr. Tall for over 25 years!

When is it time to leave your current church position?

After years of serving a congreation, no matter what faith, burn out occurs. Often times as a Church Musician a person may not feel appreciated and that there hard work is taken for granted for. Consider the following points in your decision making process.

1) You have lost respect for your minister and or the church board.

2) You feel like you do not have the support you once had either from parishoners.

3) People are leaving the church.

4) You lack the joy that you once had in serving this particular church.

5) Has your church increased your job responsibiliities without increasing your pay.

5) Do you feel like your being forced out of your profession either through lack of affirmation from other church member and choir members and the church staff or are you not getting appropriate cost of living raises, etc.

Of course, we can all feel discouraged a different times. It's the nature of the 'business'.

I firmly believe that happiness is an inside job. Doing a personal assessment I think is the first step. Try to determine by talking to colleagues and friends whose opinion you trust whether what your experiencing is primariliy from the 'outside' and not based on other issues you may be personally experiencing in life.

Cultivate friendships in the ministry outside your own church body to bounce ideas off of and gain objectivity. I know that in general men tend to put too much stock in their jobs and look up their profession to establish their self-worth as a person.
Gaining perspective no matter what situation you find yourself in is important.

Sometimes people will 'leap ship" and go to another church but, the one issue people fail to realize is that you take yourself with you. If a person tends to be negative and down in their disposition, changing churches will not make one happy.
I used to own a resume business and over a period of over 20 years assisted over 4,000 people with improving and producing new resumes. I noticed that people who were positiive and tried to stay optomistic usually got new positions with better pay and benefits quicker.

It's all in the attitude.

Joy in your journey today,

Art Scott
PS - I am always open to your feedback and if you wish to submit an article of interest to other members, feel free.

Welcome to the Orange County Church Musicians Site

Greetings! This site has been a long time in the making; a lot of care and thought has gone into it's making. I hope you will use it daily for not only the articles but also as a source for personal enrichment. As a church musician myself with over 30+ years experience, I know first hand the joy of finding a church position which lasts for years and is very satisfying and I also what it is like to find oneself in the wrong position and have to terminate oneself when the church is not working out.

The intention of this site is three fold;

-To allow churches to posting openings in their music department including Organist, Pianist, Instrumentalists, Vocalist, Choirmasters, Choir Directors, Minister of Music, Interim and Substitute Positions. We are open to all faiths.

-To post meaningful articles of interest submitted by various members of the Orange County Church Music Community.

-As a Church Musician who may be looking for a position, we will offer a section where you can post what your looking for and can do so in an anonymous fashion if you so desire.

Is there a subject that is of particular interest to you?
Some suggestions so far has been;
"When is it time to move on in a church position?"
"How to prepare a resume."
"What questions to ask in an interview."
"How and when to negotiate for a better salary and benifits."
"What are reasonable salaries and job descriptions here in Southern California."

Please send us your email address if you wish to be updated as new Church Jobs become open here in Orange County CA.
